"Brindavanathukku", like many other songs by Kannadasan, extols Krishna. The song "Raman Ethanai" is set in Sindhu Bhairavi raga, and symbolises "the role of Ram in the popular imagination and in the arts, endlessly fascinating poets, dancers, musicians, scholars and filmmakers".
For contrast, we only have to look at the villain character Samuthirakani played in Rajini Murugan. But here, the antagonists so bland - Pala Karuppaiah plays a big shot and he has a son who is blander.
Like in varuthapadatha Vaalibar Sangam and Rajini Murugan, the director doesn't want things to become too serious, which is perfectly OK. Ponram seems to have exhausted his bag of tricks, a fact that we notice in the over-dependence on movie-song references to make scenes feel funny. Mirnalini Ravi plays his romantic interest and there's hardly any chemistry between her and Sasikumar.Ĭoupled with the writing, which feels stale and shallow, it deals a double blow from which the film hardly recovers. He is also like a fish out of water in the romantic scenes. And this proves to be the film's undoing as the scenes between him and Sathyaraj do not crackle as they should. But the same cannot be said for Sasikumar, who is miscast in the role of Ravi as it requires a certain amount of comic flair. For Sathyaraj, who built a career out of nakkals, MGR is a tailormade role for him as he gets to mock Sasikumar's son and also add some emotional heft to the father-son relationship. He is the proverbial good-for-nothing son to his father MG Ramasamy aka MGR (Sathyaraj), who practises naturopathy. His Anbalippu Ravi is a happy-go-lucky guy who has only one aim - to appear on the front page of a newspaper. In MGR Magan, the characterisation of the protagonist is no different.
Over the past decade, Ponram struck up a formidable collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan, whose comic timing was a perfect match for the carefree nature of the director's protagonists. In his films, plot is just a clothes hanger for comedy and colourful characters. In the films that he has done so far, Ponram displayed a knack for keeping things lighthearted and interesting even when the narrative went nowhere.
